The granulation is conventionally performed in the following process steps : 

  • Mixing of dry material at high impeller and chopper speeds for a few minutes.
  • Addition of liquid binder by pouring it onto the powder, while both the impeller and chopper are running at a low rate.
  • Wet massing with both agitators running at high speed.

Impellers fixed at the bottom of a dome-shaped stainless steel bowl. It has a full length and two half-length blades. Impellers help offer small edges lift the material, and full-length blades push the material to mix well. These impellers break up the wet mass into small pieces and granules.

Chopper : 

These specially designed small blades are located at the bottom of the dome. The chopper’s primary function is to cut the lumps into smaller fragments mixed equally by the impeller and aids the bowl or sprayed onto the powder to achieve a more homogeneous liquid distribution. It rotates at high speed (1440/2880) RPM to give easy and uniform granulation. The rate of the chopper is responsible for the size of the granule. Chopper does not significantly affect the granule size when impeller speed is high (above 200 RPM).

Discharge Port : 

The discharge port is mounted horizontally into the dome with the vertical downward opening. Granules are unloaded in the container through the discharge port. The discharge port’s opening is operated by a pneumatic cylinder (compressed air cylinder) that requires 3-5 kg/cm2 pressure of compress air.

Working Principle of Rapid mixer granulator : 

The Rapid Mixer Granulator/granulation machine is a mixing unit with a bottom entry agitator ad side mounted chopper for granulation. It is used for dry blending, dry granulator, wet mixing, dough preparation, and granulation, i.e., cutting off the damp mass into small granules. It works on the basic principle of agitation of the bowl’s contents at moderate speed and then running a specially profiled cutter blade at high speeds into the wet mass.

Dry mixing takes about 3-5 minutes to mix the ingredients; wet mixing takes 5-10 minutes to make the material’s wet mass. The granulation process takes 5-10 minutes to 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm sized granules.

Mixing time consumed in processing is depends upon the ingredient’s quantity and their particle size.

  4. Granule Formation:

  5. Drying:

    • After granulation, the wet granules need to be dried to remove moisture. Some rapid mixing granulators have an integrated drying function. Others require transferring the wet mass to a separate fluid bed dryer or another drying unit.
  6. Discharge:

    • Once the granules are adequately dried, they are discharged from the rapid mixing granulator. This can be done by tilting the mixing bowl or using other discharge mechanisms.
  7. Sieving (Optional):

    • In some cases, the granules may undergo sieving to ensure a consistent particle size distribution and to remove any fines or oversized particles.
  8. Final Product:

    • The resulting granules are then used as the basis for tablet compression. The uniform size and shape of the granules contribute to the quality and consistency of the final pharmaceutical product.
